A day like this reminds me what
it means to be a Nigerian. It reminds me
what a land of opportunities we have. It reminds me of the sacrifice that has
been put in to make us a great nation; the war fought, the lives lost and the challenges
we continue to face. Nation building is not a small task. I am also reminded
today of many leaders who have betrayed their given mandate and impoverished
Nigerians by stash our commonwealth into private accounts.
These days, I have learnt not to
expect too much from the government to avoid being disappointed but however it
may be, the senseless killings of innocent students in Yobe state, continuous ethnic crises in Nassarawa state, the lingering ASUU strike, a power sector in
need of help, the list is endless. Yet, we must continue to have faith in our
great nation for it is the only nation we can call our own. To love, cherish
and respect our fellow countrymen and forge a common front against terrorism is
the way forward. We are making progress, we are moving forward. Truly, we can
disagree without being disagreeable. We are not as divided as our politics
suggest neither are we as fearless as not to confront our greatest challenges
as the current violence in the North-East suggests.
Today, even though we are 53
years as a nation, we still have a long way to go in righting our wrongs. While
we draw inspirations from our heroes past, who have laid down their lives for
the course of this nation, we dare to remind our leaders to show seriousness
and commitment to the greatness and development of our nation. A flock of sheep
led by a Lion will defeat o pack of wolves led by a goat. I charge the
incumbent president, President Goodluck Jonathan, “fear not, dispense your
duties with strong will and adequate transparency. Let genuineness be your
watchword. Cower before no one and stay committed to delivering on your given
mandate.”
As a person, I hate to recount
how things are not working in Nigeria, how kidnapping is the order of the day,
how our youths are trooping in their numbers out of Nigeria, how our leaders
are not sincere with what it takes to make progress. I hate to repeat these
things to myself. Our progress may be slow, but we are heading somewhere, our
challenges may be much but it leads to a brighter day. People who will have a
place in the evolving Nigeria are those who will take responsibility as from
today; people who will not wait on government before they make a move; yes,
people who don't play the blame game. These people will have a great place in
the Nigeria that is evolving. For the politicians fighting dirty over Old PDP
and New PDP, get ready to reconcile.
Remember, a house divided against itself will not stand. Sheath your swords or
risk endangering this nation.
There is still hope for this
nation. When we compare our country with other countries that started from the
same point with us years back, we can see what tremendous progress they’ve made
which testifies to the fact that in national building, slow and steady wins the
race. Let’s all be encouraged; let’s all be inspired. To them that believe, all
things are possible.
So far, Nigeria has gone through
many hiccups, many challenges but if we can keep fighting, we shall win, we
shall someday become one of the most desirable nations to live in within the
shortest possible time. I am an optimist. I am a Nigerian. I am a Motivator!
Long live the Federal Republic of
Nigeria.
Nigeria, good people, great
nation!
